Proper installation helps the Quantum Series UV system operate safely and effectively as part of a whole-home water treatment setup.
This article provides a general installation overview. For full installation steps, follow the owner’s manual included with your system or work with a licensed plumber familiar with local plumbing codes and system requirements.
Pre-Installation Prep: Required Conditions
Before installing the UV system, confirm that the installation environment, water supply, and utilities meet the required conditions for proper operation.
The system requires:
- Standard 120V electrical outlet
- Protected indoor installation location
- Cold-water line installation
- Water that is clear and properly pre-treated before entering the UV chamber
- Adequate clearance for future UV lamp and quartz sleeve removal
The system should not be installed outdoors or in a location exposed to freezing temperatures, direct sunlight, or extreme heat. UV systems rely on light exposure inside the chamber, so water entering the system must be clear enough for the UV light to pass through effectively.
Plumbing Guidance
The Quantum Series UV system is installed into the home’s water line. It should be placed after applicable pre-treatment equipment so water entering the UV chamber is clear and within the required operating conditions.
A licensed plumber is recommended for installation, especially if plumbing modifications, grounding, soldering, or local code requirements apply.
When planning the plumbing layout:
- Confirm the inlet and outlet ports are clear of obstruction
- Leave enough clearance for future lamp and sleeve maintenance
- Use appropriate fittings for the system model
- Use plumber’s tape on threaded connections as needed
- Maintain proper grounding on copper plumbing systems
- Keep solder joints at least 6 inches away from the UV system when soldering nearby piping
The manual states that the AS-UV8S and AS-UV12S use 3/4-inch male NPT connections, while the 18 GPM unit uses 3/4-inch female NPT and 1-inch male NPT connections.
Basic Installation Overview
The following steps provide a general outline of the installation process.
- Shut off the main water supply.
- Open the nearest cold-water faucet to confirm water flow is off.
- Select an indoor mounting location with enough clearance for maintenance.
- Mount the UV chamber horizontally or vertically, with vertical mounting recommended when possible.
- Connect the inlet and outlet plumbing lines using appropriate fittings.
- Install the quartz sleeve and UV lamp according to the system instructions.
- Slowly restore water flow.
- Flush the plumbing lines to clear air or debris.
- Check all plumbing connections for leaks.
- Connect the system to power.
- Confirm the ballast indicator is glowing green.
Vertical mounting is recommended because it helps support optimal contact time for the UV wavelength inside the chamber. The system should also be mounted where the UV lamp and quartz sleeve can be removed later for service.
Professional Installation Recommendation
The Quantum Series UV system requires both plumbing and electrical integration. If installation experience is limited, working with a qualified professional is recommended.
A licensed plumber or technician can help ensure proper setup, prevent installation issues, and verify that the system is operating as intended.
Operating Requirements
To maintain proper performance, the system must operate within the required water and environmental conditions.
The Quantum Series UV system requires:
- Water temperature: 32°F–100°F
- Water pressure: 25–125 PSI
- Iron: less than 0.3 ppm
- Hardness: less than 7 gpg / 120 mg/L
- Turbidity: less than 1 NTU
- Manganese: less than 0.05 ppm
- Tannins: less than 0.1 ppm
- UV transmittance: greater than 75%
If daytime pressure is over 80 PSI, nighttime pressure may exceed the maximum allowable pressure. A pressure reducing valve may be needed to reduce pressure if necessary. Where total hardness is above 7 GPG, the water should be softened.
After Installation
After the system is installed, complete the startup process before normal use.
Follow these steps:
- Slowly restore the main water supply.
- Open the nearest cold-water faucet and allow water to run for a few minutes, or until air and debris are cleared from the lines.
- Check all plumbing connections for leaks.
- If a leak is found, shut off the water supply before inspecting or correcting the connection.
- Once the water runs clear and there are no leaks, shut off the faucet.
- Plug the AC adapter into a nearby wall outlet.
- Confirm the ballast LED indicator glows green, which means the lamp is on and the system is operating.
Before using the water, allow the UV system to operate for 3–5 minutes so it can reach full operating capacity. To help clear any remaining air or debris, run water through the UV system for 2–3 minutes before normal use.
