This guide covers essential information about managing salt and water levels in your brine tank, choosing the right water softener size and model for your home, and understanding the specifications for drain and brine lines. Proper knowledge in these areas helps maintain your system’s performance and longevity.
Salt and Water Levels in Your Brine Tank
Maintaining correct salt and water levels in the brine tank is vital for your water softener’s regeneration process. Proper balance ensures the salt dissolves evenly, allowing your system to work efficiently and provide consistently softened water.
Salt Level:
- Start with 80 lbs of pellet salt in your brine tank.
- Refill salt when the level drops to less than a quarter full from the bottom to prevent regeneration issues.
- Add only 80 lbs at a time to avoid salt bridging or blockages.
- A full salt supply typically lasts 2–3 months, depending on household water use.
Water Level:
- Outside of regeneration cycles, water should fill about half the brine tank to dissolve salt evenly.
- Maintaining the correct water level ensures the salt dissolves evenly during regeneration.

Proper installation and maintenance of these lines ensure your system functions correctly without leaks or drainage issues.
Drain Line (orange clip):
- Can be any length, but lengths over 20 feet require increasing pipe size from ½-inch to ¾-inch.
- Cannot be run more than 7 feet vertically.
- Drains approximately 60–80 gallons per regeneration cycle.
- ½-inch outer diameter pipe has a 3/8-inch inner diameter.
- ¾-inch outer diameter pipe has a ½-inch inner diameter.
Brine Line (blue clip):
- Connects from the brine tank float valve to the softener.
- Cutting is not recommended but possible if necessary.
- Typical length is about 6 feet of 3/8-inch tubing.
