Cleaning your brine tank once a year helps prevent salt buildup, sediment, and clogs that can reduce your water softener’s efficiency and lifespan. Regular cleaning keeps the brine solution fresh and ensures your system regenerates properly, maintaining optimal performance.
When to Clean Your Brine Tank
Depending on your water quality and salt usage, clean the brine tank every 6 to 12 months to keep your softener working smoothly.
Brine Tank Cleaning Steps
Before starting any maintenance on your Harmony Series water softener, take the following safety precautions:
- Wear gloves and safety glasses if handling salt residue or heavy buildup.
- Make sure the area around the softener is dry to avoid slipping.
Once you’ve ensured you’ve taken the right safety measurements, follow the steps below to clean your brine tank:
- Allow the salt level to drop naturally before cleaning to avoid wasting salt.
- Disconnect the brine line from the tank to free it for cleaning.
- Empty any remaining water and salt from the tank.
- Use a garden hose to thoroughly rinse the inside of the tank and brine well, removing sediment and salt buildup.
- Reconnect the brine line securely.
- Refill the tank with 80 pounds of fresh pellet salt.
- After adding salt, pour 5 gallons of clean water into the brine tank to reestablish the proper water level.
- Replace the lid securely and monitor salt levels regularly.
Regular cleaning extends your system’s lifespan and helps maintain consistent soft water quality. If you notice unusual odors, buildup, or a decline in softening performance, cleaning the tank promptly can help resolve these issues.
